N E W P R O D U C T! ! ! ! Most people regard the Hawaiian islands as a tropical getaway, with year-round warmth and lush greenery. While much of this statement is true*, there is an exception: "Mauna Kea," (pronounced "Mow-nah-Kay-ah") which means "white mountain" in Hawaiian. It is located on the island of Hawaii, commonly known as the "Big Island." The central and highest cone (Pu'u Wekiu) is 13,796 feet (4,205 m), and is the highest point in the state. But what is even more fascinating is that Mauna Kea is actually the tallest mountain in the world from base to summit. This is because the mountain's base is located on the seafloor about 19,000 feet (5,800 m) below the Pacific ocean, which brings the total height to about 33,000 feet (10,000 m).
Due to this high elevation, the summit of this dormant volcano becomes covered in snow during the Northern Hemisphere winter each year. This makes it a popular destination for experienced skiers and snowboarders.
Another interesting fact about Mauna Kea is that it is considered one of the best astronomical sites in the world. For this reason the summit houses many of the world's largest and leading astronomical observatories and boasts over a dozen telescopes.
